If you happen to get him talking about what it was like, growing up in a time when tensions between mundanes and supes were hitting an all-time high, he'll tell you simply that it was probably the worst and best time to be an impressionable young teen -- precisely because it either brought out the worst or best in you.
August was sixteen when the Black Christmas transpired, and that event left a lasting impression on the Brit, who resolved to enter the service with the belief that it was one's responsibility to do his part for the world (supe or mundie, this was the only world they had -- was it so bloody hard for people to look beyond envying their neighbor and just try to bloody get along?).
It was six years after his graduation from RMAS and a horrific tour during the Indo-Pakistan War of 2032-2035, that August was allowed an honorable discharge in 2037. He applied to Interpol not long after, in the hopes that the agency would allow him a lot more "leg room" where making a difference was concerned and his recruitment was facilitated by an old friend from secondary schooling, John Sokolov, who shared his views on how Pax Deorum was actually trying to do some honest-to-God good.
It was August's discovery that Grendal sleeper agents had infiltrated the ranks of the International Police that was the cause of his Awakening as a Card of the Heirophant Triumph. He had been informed that a "routine op" had ended with the death of his friend but he had been unable to shake the feeling that something was amiss. He had pursued the truth and it had gotten him killed, and this brings us to the current leg of Mr. Barnes' career.
August's entry into Rhiannon put him under the London Towers' Security Deparment. Over the course of the next three decades, he rose in the ranks and in 2063, he was scouted by Inquisitor Mica Torillo-Young for the position of Director of Security for the Rhiannon Towers in Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines. He's still there to date, and as far as he's concerned, he'll be there for a while yet.
PERSONALITY.
August considers himself a pragmatic individual with the grit to stay true to his course and enough flexibility to switch directions when circumstances call for it. His service record shows as much, given that his reasons for entering and subsequently leaving the military for a post in Interpol, and his eventual entry into Rhiannon are anchored in his steadfast belief in the Vigil and the thrust of Pax Deorum. He's a soldier by profession and a beat cop at heart -- you don't choose the service, it chooses you.
